Box/Line Reduction

Locked candidates

How it works

Box/line reduction — the mirror of pointing. Look at one row or column: if every remaining cell that could hold a digit falls inside a single 3×3 box, that digit must end up somewhere in that box — so it can be eliminated from the rest of the box outside that row or column.

Try it

Look at column 1. Let's pencil in what's still possible there, then see why digit 3 is forced into just one box.

Tap each empty cell in column 1, then tap every digit that's still possible there — check what's already used in that cell's row, column and box. Press "Check my work" when you're ready.

Every cell in column 1 that can still hold 3 falls inside box 7. That digit has to go somewhere in column 1 — so wherever it lands, it'll be inside box 7.

Which means 3 can be crossed out everywhere else in box 7.

Tap a highlighted cell, then tap its red digit on the pad below to cross it out — the highlighted cells show why it can't go there.
