How it works

Two digits, within one row, column or box, only fit into the same two cells — even though those cells may still show other candidates too. Since both digits have to go somewhere in that unit, and only these two cells can take them, every other candidate can be cleared from those two cells.

Try it

Look at row 1. Let's pencil in what's still possible for Row 1, Column 5 and Row 1, Column 6, then see why 2 and 6 are hiding there.

Tap each of Row 1, Column 5 and Row 1, Column 6, then tap every digit that's still possible there — check what's already used in that cell's row, column and box. Press "Check my work" when you're ready.

Within row 1, 2 and 6 only fit into Row 1, Column 5 and Row 1, Column 6 — even though those cells still show other candidates too. Since both digits have to go somewhere in row 1, and only these cells can take them, every other candidate on Row 1, Column 5 and Row 1, Column 6 is extra.

Which means every candidate except 2 and 6 can be crossed out on Row 1, Column 5 and Row 1, Column 6.

Tap a highlighted cell, then tap its red digit on the pad below to cross it out — the highlighted cells show why it can't go there.
