How it works

Pick a digit and two rows where it has only two possible cells left. If those two pairs sit in the very same two columns, the digit takes one cell in each row — and between them they use up both columns. So the digit can be eliminated from those two columns everywhere outside the pattern. It works identically starting from two columns and eliminating along rows.

Try it

Digit 7 is pinned down by rows 6 and 9. Let's pencil in the highlighted cells — every place 7 can still go in those lines — then see why it can't sit anywhere else in columns 1 and 4.

Tap each highlighted cell, then tap every digit that's still possible there — check what's already used in that cell's row, column and box. Press "Check my work" when you're ready.

In rows 6 and 9, 7 has only two cells left apiece — and all four line up inside columns 1 and 4. Each of those lines has to take 7 somewhere, so between them they use it up once in each of columns 1 and 4.

Which means 7 can be crossed out everywhere else in columns 1 and 4.

Tap a highlighted cell, then tap its red digit on the pad below to cross it out — the highlighted cells show why it can't go there.
